SUMMARY
1) Den restoration project

(a) Targetted to be done during the 2 week school holidays from around end of May to early June 2007, preferably in no more than 10 days.

(b) Current ESG to prepare, carry out and submit the following by 1st week of May 2007
(i) Plans and requirements
(ii) Simple scaffolding structures on the side
(iii) Remove the many pieces of wood beside the Den as clear out the other items in the Den compound,
(iv) Current ESG advised not to proceed with their intention to proceed with
chopping of the big trees

(c) Den restoration project is planned to cover the following areas:
(i) Roof leaks
(ii) Re-wiring and lighting
(iii) Toliot repairs
(iv) Required structural repairs
(v) Paint job
(vi) Soil erosion problem on the side

Those who were at this 'Chirling Sanctuary', which is what it's called, were Mr Tee, Eric Hew and 2 friends, Ming Wai and Wen Di, Peter Pang and Luke, Alvin Liew, wife and 2 kids, Joe Yan and son, Chin Kee, wife and 2 kids. Many thanks to Eric, his cousin Peter and friend Justin for taking us there. The waterfall was indeed big and nice, the pool below it was very very cool and it was really full of fish the entire stretch from the waterfall all the way down the river. The walk took about 1 and half hours where we crossed the same river 6 times. We saw some campers along the way and we had about 5 tourists for company at the waterfall, and it was very clean and private. It was rather unfortunate that Alvin's car window was broken into although nothing was stolen, probably because Joe Yan and son had returned to where our cars were parked right after they broke the car window. Definitely worth a second visit by Eagle Link, in my opinion, as well as taking the current ESG there.

Dinner at Overseas Restaurant at Jln Imbi on Nov 20 2006. From top left - Chin Kee, Fook Keong, Lambert, Edgar, Duke, Yangtse and Francis Tan. Bob, Leong Kwok, Kim Fook and Cheng Hooi could not make it. Since then, we have roped in Benedict Lee, Moe Bing Tah and we're trying to rope in all other SJI guys of our year to, perhaps, work on a CNY gathering of everyone, including non scouts, from our year. Thanks to Lambert, Yangtse and Edgar, the wine was very nice and went well with the 'char siew'. We went through Yangtse's CD collection of scanned pictures (1970-1976), which we intend to circulate/post - just seeing how scrawny and small we used to be compared to the potbellies now, would, I'm sure, bring enough laughter to you and your families !. Yes, Ming Wai was the PL for Beaver Patrol in the 70s but these are not the members of his patrol. This is the team of PLs who took first place in the Scout Craft Competition in 1975 or 76. Patrol Outing Report- Kangaroo Patrol [25/Apr06]
The members of Kangaroo patrol [Chik Wai, Eu Ming, Beow] finally managed to convince their spouse and kids [8] to go for an ‘arduous’ adventurous hike and a wonderful BBQ picnic beside Maroondah Dam, 30km on the outskirt of Melbourne on 25/April 2006.

And so the story goes... To keep up the scouting spirit, the members of Kangaroo patrol has been holding regular monthly meeting over lunches. During those meetings, we often spend considerable time musing over Chin Kee's current troop news and updates. The emails seem to be coming fast and furious these days on matters other than scouting or camping i.e., diabetic remedies, poisonous perfumes, job vacancies, discount tickets, etc. However, the recent spite of cycling news did motivate us abit. As such, Kangaroo patrol leader EuMing bravely muted the idea of doing our fair share of activities by going for an adventurous hike/outing. To which both Chik Wai and I immediately and enthusiastically agree! Since he suggested it, it is customary here that he also organise it. For this task, we gave him only 4 small criteria; namely 1) it has to be children friendly and exciting for them, 2) it had to be not more that 60 min from Melbourne, 3) we have to have a meal together, and 4) it had to be a beautiful sunny day.

Our patrol leader deliberated on the task for weeks, and then conveniently forgot about it. However, Assistant Patrol Leader Chik Wai reminded him again after having watching the recent 'Survivor IXVI' series. With both their corporate planning skills and effort combined, a day was finally set and a beautiful venue beside a water catchment dam was chosen. They even proposed a few options in case the day was not sunny. Option 1- stay at home, option 2-BBQ in the rain, over a poncho or umbrella, or option 3 stay in the car and just eat plain bread. Outing at this time of the year in Melbourne is temperamental, dependent on the weather. I am glad to report that we did not need to utilise the suggested 'options' because it turned out to be a fantastic day. As the photo shows, it was sunny and perfect for a hike and BBQ.

For the day, we did an arduous hike up to the dam [20min, ho! ho!], had a BBQ, then had a soccer match. During the hike, Chik Wai was reminded of how heavy a haversack can be because his daughter tricked him into carrying her all the way up to the dam [smart girl!]. The BBQ was delicious. It reminded me of why camp food always taste great, I think it is because it has real bits of ashes on it. The 4-a-side soccer was Eu Ming's brainchild idea to keep fit. Being down-under, his rules were 45min warm-up [with eating], then 15min of soccer, then 45min rest, tea and coffee. Unanimously, the adults all thought that the 15min play time were fair and adequate. In addition, the soccer match allowed Eu Ming [and me too] to acquient with near-death experience, i.e., fatigue, extreme palpitation, shortness of breath and muscle spasms. Consistent with aussie rule soccer, Eu Ming saved the day by ruling that for injury time-out, we minus the playing time, instead of adding it to extend the play. Again, the gasping adults all thought this rule was fair.

In all we had a great day. Kids, spouses and old scouts were all happy.
Note: Since I did no organising, I am dutifully carrying out my assigned role as scribe for this trip.
PS-Admin Notes: Mun Seng is from SJI but was not a scout. Could someone please send me the latest Eagle Scout enrolment form for a new applicant. And kindly remind me of the application fee, [do pensioners get a discount?]. Which international bank account do I bank the funds into?

Need to thank Wing Kwong and Nasir for sponsoring the food and drinks. For the record, the pooled funds started as RM 950, we used up RM 415.40 on March 30th's first session, we had an additional collection of RM 180 on the second session and we now have a healthy balance of RM 714.60, so you can bet we'll have many more sessions, where the next time we plan to have it in the restaurant upstairs at same place of Hotel Midah, so we don't have to call the food down to the pub, i.e. we call the drinks up to the Restaurant, instead. ... to play "catch-up" with you guys.

Anyway, I've been here in sunny California since the Fall of 1980. Originally came here as a journalism major and switched to theatre a year later. My explanation to my Mum was, "I may be poor for the rest of my life... but at least I'll be happy doing what I want." In that time I have earned a living doing what I was trained to do - theatre. Not many folks (even here) can say that. And the answer is ... no... I'm not rich... at least financially.

Was married for a while. (I think I'm a better ex-husband than I was a husband.) Been through the ups and downs of this roller coaster we call life. I've toured doing storytelling. Managed a theater and am currently kicking up my own theatre company again (http://theatrejnerique.com/ ) after a 3 year hiatus. I've written 50 plays - all of which have been produced... some internationally. Founded an international fringe festival of sorts called the Rogue. (David Lim has performed in it for the past 3 years... and is expected to again next year... that's him in the pic with me in SF.)

Mum, who is slowing down quite a bit, lives with me. I've got 4 dogs. I own a house, drive a truck... and none of you have visited yet! Now I'm trying to figure out the next chapter in my life. So there you have it in a nutshell. (Did the last 2 paragraphs sound like a "dating service" profile?)

This was a historic return to one of our first camping havens after close to 30 years and, for many, a renewal of ties. In fact, we parked at the very spot we had camped those days. It was named 'Honsuka' because Colin was riding a 'Honda', Andrew Ee a 'Suzuki' and Ng Seng Kian a 'Kawasaki' those days. Colin and Andrew came and it would have been nice to somehow locate Seng Kian as well. Name of the river is actually 'Sungei Lawing' and we had it all to ourselves ! From these pictures I'm sure you can deduce everyone had a great time. Besides bathing in the unadulterated clean 'lubok's and falls, the kids did not want to go back as they wanted to continue to catch the prawns and fish (they got quite a few) and Tog Tan's 'live' demonstration and talk on snakes was very informative and interesting, with everyone no longer having the traditional fear or apprehension about them. There's 2 pondoks, under which the 'oldies' chatted, with sufficient space for camping and exploring upstream, downstream and into the jungle as well. Privacy is assured as not many know about it, it's not very near the road and not so easily accessible by 'low bottom' cars. Basically, we had already agreed that this would be our regular meeting place from now on, with someone suggesting we organise a camping trip there as well. As to who were there, do try to identify them from the pictures, i.e. Mr Robert Tee Sing and wife, Mr Yap Kim Hoong, Colin, Andrew and son, Anna Seetho and Kwok Chi plus 3 kids, Leong Kwok and daughter, Edgar Cheah, Edmund Cheah, Edwin Cheah and daughter , Take Bane and daughter, Joe Yan and wife Sherlyn and 2 kids, Francis See and wife and 4 daughters, Tog Tan and his snake, Peter Foo and Carene and 3 kids and Chin Kee, Seuk Ying and 2 kids. Let's live life to the fullest in our 'growing old days' while we try to be 'YIS' ('Young in Spirit') where, as expressed by Tog, we'd rather do this with our families and guys we grew up with, whom we already know 'inside out' as genuine friends, who don't see everything in commercial terms and as commercial value, and, in that sense, the best kind of support group one can ever have. Hi, it's Kien Lim. Yes, you know me (well, those who do!) as David Lim. The reason behind the switch from my English name to my Chinese one is simple. A friend here in London started calling me and introducing me by my Chinese name as he prefered it and it stuck. I got used to it and now like it.

What do I do now? I've just embarked on a new career of singer/songwriter (started singing in 2003) and am now busking (the last 10 months or so) for a living in the subways of London. That's how Vincent Koh bumped into me. I was busking at Leicester Square Tube station when I saw a familiar face. He didn't recognize me though!

Busking just about pays the bills and I am looking to take my musical career to the next stage. So if anybody happens to have any ideas, gigs, or just happens to own a record company or happens to be a shit hot manager, please contact me. MIXED MEMORIES OF A SCOUTING BOYHOOD

It’s great to hear from the Eagle Scouts. Some of my fondest memories of childhood were of my time in the Eagle Scout Group and the great friends I shared those times with.

Some of you may recall that I and my brother Paul were ignominiously expelled from the Eagle Scouts at the age of 15!!!

Just to set the record straight let me tell you what happened. We took part in the Job Week event and for many days we went around houses in Kampung Pandan, Ampang Jaya and Ampang Village, thinking in our immature idealism that doing work in poorer areas would be more charitable! So there we were cleaning drains, washing cars and washing out dustbins and for each task only getting paid 30 or 50 cents each sometimes for two or three hours work! Once we were even told “if this is for charity then it is up to me how much I give!”…. and promptly given a paltry sum for a couple of hours work. Once these amounts were on our worksheets the trend was difficult to change.

Despite this humiliation and exploitation we plodded on in the spirit of doing “every task entrusted to us and never saying die until we’re dead”. My father consoled me with the words that “A good deed well done is a reward unto itself.” Needless to say at the end we had not earned as much as some of the other scouts. We had no relatives or kindly neighbours who donated generous amounts to boost our collection. Some of the other guys, by their own admission, brought in huge amounts of money donated by wealthy relatives and family friends and hardly did any actual work for the money they brought in.

Knowing that we had put in hard work we proudly presented to the troop the money we had collected … EVERY SINGLE CENT of it.

Imagine our dismay when we, expecting praise, were instead hauled up in front of a committee of senior scouts who proceeded to scold us for our low contribution, accusing us instead of taking some of the money for ourselves! After a fifteen minute “trial” during which our pleas of innocence were ignored, a verdict of guilty was pronounced. We were summarily dismissed from the troop!! This brought to a sad end my…. up to this point … very happy days as a scout.

The scout troop continued and making canoes and canoeing, which had been introduced to the group by Raymond Phang and myself (using the plans donated by my father) became a popular, approved activity for the 8 Eagle Scouts making them one of the more pioneering groups in Kuala Lumpur. Strangely enough, a few weeks before my expulsion we had been informed that the committee had decided that canoeing was an unsuitable activity because of potential dangers. So there I was, expelled from the troop, watching the members enjoying the activity I loved and hearing of them being praised for their creativity!!

Needless to say this left a marked impression on me and Paul, and a lesson about justice and injustice remains with me to this day and I always feel great sympathy for people who are accused of things they haven’t done.

Actually it turned out that there was a silver lining to all of this as we soon discovered Scouting for Girls!!

So that’s my story, it’s all in the past and we’ve all moved on. Hope you are all well and my good wishes to all of you. Have a very good Year of the Dog!

Eagle Link Community - Going forward

Dear Eagle Scouts,

For future communications among ourselves, I've discussed and researched with Richard Chia and we'd like it done this way, in which case you should expect some messages to come your way for guidance and follow ups from either of us, as joint moderators :

Everyone uses Eagle Link Yahoo group for :

(1) Sending of emails to the group or members of the group (Of course traditional emailing
methods is still an option available to all)
(2) Discussion threads within the group to organise events, etc
(3) Sending of event reports and pictures to the group or members of the group in a way
whereby it will not bomb out your mailbox storage

Everyone uses the Eagle Link Community Blog as a 'Bulletin Board', for current members and new members, where the latter can easily view back what was not received earlier :

(1) Posting of articles, reports and pictures from events or contributions on common interests (2) Entry of comments to the above
(3) Tracing and viewing of the above

Once this works out well, it can be pre-cursor for a multi-generational networking group or community, for use by all of us and families and an easy way for us to continue to keep in touch. Moreover, remember we have people from all kinds of professions, except the vices perhaps !

Eagle Link Community Dinner Dec 18 2005 PJ Hilton

Here's the group picture which was taken at this dinner, can you recognise everyone in it (Charles Tan and Vincent Koh are not in as they had to leave earlier and Leong Kwok came late so he's not in as well) ?. Next event is to organise a day trip picnic near some stream or waterfall with members and families. Caution on forged RM 100 note

A notification has been sent by Association of Banks Malaysia to all Banks that a forged RM 100 note was detected in Johor, about 2 weeks back. Salient features are

(a) Paper quality is almost similar to original
(b) No silver thread at back of the note
(c) No agong water mark
(d) The note glows under ultra violet light

Would advise everyone to be cautious because such notes would, naturally, not be accepted by Banks. Of course, we do not expect such information to be widely circulated in the press, as nobody wishes to stir up any panic.

James and yourself cannot make any assumptions on what the old boys are prepared to do. As mentioned in my earlier email, I have conveyed your message to them. You need to bear in mind our earlier messages, which have basically not been responded to, i.e. that you guys should plan what you want to do, get quotations, for the old boys to consider whether and how they may be able to help and basically you guys should do the work, including getting paint ! For us old boys, ESG has basically always worked for our money and our needs , with some materials discounted. Again, I can only convey what you guys are asking for and I'm leaving it to the old boys for their opinions on your requests and any action they may want to take but you have to also take heed of what we're saying here because to us scouting also means being industrious, resourceful, being independent and basically working for what we want and that money does not come or flow easily. Please understand our message, it's not that we do not want to help.

Did not contact you ,as exam is on .Just to tell u that we all going to start fixing the Scout Den this upcoming holiday.We are planning to collect rm10 from seniors and rm 5 from juniors.Date is not confirmed yet byt maybe on the second week as there will be hari raya.May take a whole week.

Problems

1. one part of the roof is leaking
2.another part of the floor is also fragile.
3.The COH door needs to be repaired.
4The upper floor needs to be painted.
5.Toilet is the biggest problem.
6.The bakau and bamboo rack have to be enlarged for all the new bakaus and bamboos

What we gonna do
we planning to fix the roof and floor.We will also be repainting the scout den ,mostly upstairs and probably the whole den.The C.O.H doors will be fixed and be painted again.The toilet is still a big problem.Dunno what to do with it.The bakau and bamboo rack will be made bigger with tying some knots and probably will be making a new rack.

With regards to captioned subject, I'm opening for debate on whether on how we should move on, based on following factors and events :

(1) They do need help in terms of den repairs and probably other forms of assistance
like skills, knowledge in scouting and organising events, etc.
(2) Their modus operandi and scouting in itself has changed a lot, e.g.
(a) They have been organised into each units, by forms, where they seem to
function independently. Those after form 5 are under another 'rovers' unit.
(b) They do not seem to work for money any more. Their visitor record book asks
for donations and the many pieces of wood for their 'longest bridge in
Malaysia', as per Malaysian Book of Records, was bought from a shop, with
donated money, I believe.
(c) Their campfires are quite different, seem to be more of a social gathering
and pretty much modernised with singing, etc.
(d) Their meetings do not focus so much on scouting or scoutcraft any more, as
they acknowledge they are rather weak in this area.
(3) The boys are very enthusiastic and the spirit is basically still there.
(4) Personally, I feel they are rather spoonfed and they are not keen on learning to
do certain things on their own, e.g. looking for and talking to contractors,
looking for lorries, etc, although some of you may differ with me to say that
the 'adults' should help them with these tasks.

In conclusion, my proposal, moving forward, is that it's quite tough to help these guys in any organized way. It may be better that everyone of us simply visits them on Saturdays individually and see whether individual assistance should be rendered, may it be donations or skills or knowledge transfer (whatever you may still have or remember) or even report back to me for dissemination or any voluntary contribution from ourselves. In other words, I do not mind being the 'mediator' amongst us old boys but not so much with the current boys directly, that it's left to each of you as individuals to decide whether or how you want to help and I would strongly urge everyone to avoid doing what the current boys themselves should be doing or in any way interfering with what and how the current boys should do, as it's their ESG and their show.

Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM)

New laws passed under the Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia Act, 2005

For those of you who's not working in a Bank or may not be aware of this new new which was already passed by Parliament, thought I'd brief all of you, as I had attended the PIDM briefing last month. This definitely should be of interest to all of us.

What does this law basically say ?

That PIDM will insure all deposits of customers with each Financial Institution (FI), in the event that the Financial Institution fails to continue it's operations in any form. The Government or Bank Negara Malaysia no longer guarantees such deposits, as in the case of the financial crisis we faced many years back. The insurance amount needs to be paid by each FI to PIDM, whereby such costs are not supposed to be absorbed by the customers (but do you seriously believe this can be monitored). Each FI has already started paying, starting with coverage for Oct 1 2005 to Dec 31 2005, whereby each has already paid a minimal amount of RM 250,000 by end September 2005.

What will happen if any FI fails ?

PIDM will pay the depositor the total amount of 'deposits' (explained below) he or she has with the FI, for each 'customer entity' (explained below), subject to maximum amount of RM 60,000.

What are the 'deposits' covered ?

Currently, coverage is only for the convential products, i.e. fixed deposits, savings accounts and current accounts. Next year, they intend to expand into other kinds of customer-based liabilities of each FI including unit trusts, uncleared cheques, etc.

What is the definition of each 'customer entity' ? (for each of which there's a separate coverage of up to RM 60,000 in each FI)

Total balances of your savings accounts, fixed deposits, current accounts which are in your name only - 1 'customer entity'.

Total balances of your savings accounts, fixed deposits, current accounts which are jointly in your name and your spouse - 1 more 'customer entity'

Total balances of your savings accounts, fixed deposits, current accounts which are jointly in your name and parents - 1 more 'customer entity'

Total balances of your child's junior savings accounts, where he or she is the beneficiary and you are the trustee for the account - separate 'customer entity' for each and every child or beneficiary , for whom you are the trustee.
